Vermont Certified Organic Maple Syrup
Each year the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) conducts an intensive inspection of both our sugarhouse and sugarbush to determine if our maple syrup is produced in accordance with the USDA National Organic Program Standards. Olde Carriage Sugarwoods is proud of the fact that we have passed these inspections, and our maple syrup has been certified organic.
Organic maple syrup production is distinguished from conventional maple syrup production:- By cultural practices designed to maintain tree health and ensure long-term preservation of the sugarbush as an ecosystem.
- By the prohibition of conventional products and methods, including: synthetic chemicals added at various stages of management and production and methods that alter the nutritive value of the processed product.
A. Cultural practices that sustain trees and their ecosystems:- Maintenance geared to the long-term preservation of the sugarbush ecosystem.
- Tapping management using preventative methods to keep trees healthy.
- Production methods and equipment designed to ensure that the product suffers no loss of nutritive value of the end product are not affected.
B. The following products and methods are prohibited in the production of pure organic maple syrup:- Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides shall not be used in the sugarbush or the premise where the processed product is produced.
- Germicides shall not be used in tapping.
- Tubing systems shall not be sanitized during the season of sap flow.
- Synthetic chemicals shall not be used to control foaming.
- No product shall be added to the sap to reduce the microbial population.
- No products shall be added to the syrup or processed product during production to improve taste, texture, or appearance.
Although we believe most Vermont maple syrup producers make an excellent product, the NOFA certification assures that you are receiving pure maple syrup produced in an environmental friendly manner.
Vermont Seal of Quality
We are also proud of the fact that we have been approved by the State of Vermont to use the Vermont Seal of Quality label on all of our maple products. This label signifies that the product is 100% produced and processed in Vermont.
